Mid-Atlantic Center
for the Arts
The Mid-Atlantic Center
for the Arts (MAC) was
founded in 1970, by a
small group of concerned
Cape May citizens, for
the express purpose of
saving the Emlen Physick
Estate, built in 1879,
from demolition. The
18-room estate was saved
and restored due to the
efforts of the Mid
Atlantic Arts
Foundation, and today
the mansion is an icon
of Cape May’s National
Historic District and a
year-round attraction.
The Physick Estate,
designed by Frank
Furness, is one of the
finest examples of
“Stick Style” Victorian
architecture. This year,
MAC introduced a new
tour of the estate
titled “Experience
Upstairs, Downstairs:
Servants and the
Served.” Tours of the
home last approximately
45 minutes and admission
includes access to the
estate’s Carriage House
Gallery. The Carriage
House also houses the
visitor’s center, where
tickets are purchased,
and Museum Shop,
featuring Victorian
souvenirs. You can also
take lunch and afternoon
tea in the Twinings
Tearoom of the Physick
Estate.
Since 1970, the
Mid-Atlantic Center for
the Arts has become a
multi-faceted non-profit
organization, taking on
numerous restoration
projects. MAC restored
the 1859 Cape May Point
Lighthouse in the
Cape
May Point State Park and
now operates the
lighthouse, where
visitors can climb 199
steps for a panoramic
view of Cape May,
Atlantic Ocean and
Delaware Bay. The
Mid-Atlantic Center for
the Arts also operates
trolley, boat, walking
and Cape May Ghost
Tours, in addition to
food and wine events and
other seasonal
activities. Trolley
tours begin at the
Washington Street Mall
Information Booth at
Ocean Street and take
visitors around Cape
May’s Historic District,
finishing with a guided
tour of the Physick
Estate, the only
Victorian house museum
in Cape May.
Truly, Mid-Atlantic
Center for the Arts is
to be thanked for Cape May’s
proper reputation as a
historical,
Victorian-themed
destination.
In conjunction with the
phenomenal
Cape May
Restaurants, the
Mid-Atlantic Arts
Foundation offers some
unique and savory dining
experiences including
the Chocolate Fantasy
Buffet and Murder
Mystery dinner show.
Wine events, English Tea
Luncheons and other
seasonal culinary events
spice up Cape May’s
already exceptional
dining repertoire.
Mid-Atlantic Arts
Foundation continues to
grow, and its prominence
in promoting the arts of
the area has turned Cape
May NJ into a
destination unlike any
other. MAC is
responsible for
instituting the
Victorian Fair, the
annual Cape May Music
Festival, and the 10 day
Victorian Week,
beginning Columbus Day
Weekend each October. In
December, experience the
spirit of the Christmas
season during MAC’s
Christmas Candlelight
House Tours. For an
educational, fun and
romantic day in Cape May
NJ, America’s oldest
resort town, enjoy all
that the Mid-Atlantic
Arts Foundation offers.
