in early December, Cape May’s
Scandinavian community hosts their
annual Swedish Festival in the nearby
town of Wildwood. Hosted at the grounds
and fellowship hall of the Lutheran
Church of the Holy Trinity, the Cape May
Christmas Swedish Festival brings with
it plenty of delicious traditional
Swedish foods including Swedish
pancakes, Scandinavian cheese, and
crafters display their local arts and
crafts during the event. Also, the Lucia
Pageant is held during this time. The
Swedish Lucia celebration is an annual
festival in Swedish culture that is held
on the 13th of December. On this day,
according to their traditions, Saint
Lucia brightens the darkness in the
world and ushers in a new period of
light and goodness and thus the
Christmas celebration begins. In Swedish
culture, Saint Lucia, or someone playing
the part of Lucia, wears a wreath of lingonberry sprigs and candles atop her
head to give the effect of a halo.
Modern day Lucia’s opt for battery
operated versions.
